A bunch of us have decided to leave the truck for a couple weeks and go to Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an (where the terracota warriors are), we are gonna meet up with the truck again in Tibet. We are gonna fly to Beijing which kinda breaks the overland rule but what the heck - we’re going to Beijing. The truck will be travelling through some desert which im a bit gutted to miss but cant go to China and not see Beijing so off we go.
First we gotta get across the border and make the flight, no easy task. We gotta get high up in the mountains and cross some pass which takes ages. Then the Chinese take everybodies temperature, twice, because of swine flu and then like most Border guards a bunch of them stand around doing nothing for a while so we can get rained on.
After holding a thermometer under my arm for five minutes my bag gets searched and I have to explain what talken powder is to some dude in a facemask.. The clock is ticking and we gotta get to the hotel we are not staying in so we can then get a taxi to the airport and catch the plane.
The hotel staff greet us with a traditional dance (what joy) which, being concentious in it for the real experience travelling types, we sit through politely smiling and trying not to look at our watches.
Eventually 2 taxis and 2 different prices later we are in the airport. Next stop Urumqui, then Beijing.
